We've spent 25 years pioneering and refining biologic orthopedic treatments. Dr. Stone holds around 50 U.S. patents on novel inventions to improve healthcare. He's always figuring out ways to improve.
Transcript: "I dedicate myself to really trying to help people recover and become fitter, faster, and stronger than they were before they got hurt or before they developed arthritis. What I love the most is that everyday I get to help people. Not just help them, I get to think about how I might be able to do it better and I have the tools around me to innovate, to create those new technologies and a team of people around me who are as excited about it as I am.
Quite frankly, it came from my own knee injury. I injured my knee in college, lost the meniscus cartilage, the shock absorber in my knee and I admired the surgeon who repaired it but was frustrated by how primitive the techniques were. They just took the cartilage out and threw it away and so I've spent much of my research career figuring out how to replace that meniscus tissue.
So I do what I do because everything that I look at and I see, I think could be made better, could be improved. I've taught my children that most of what we know isn't true and if we are doing something next year that we were doing this year, we clearly haven't learned anything. So I want them to be better for my patients, I want better tools to use, I want surgery to be more efficient, more elegant, more effective and I want our patients' rehab to be quicker and better. I think about ways to make it better and I see ways to make them better and I am passionate about doing it."
Why a biologic knee replacement is better than a bionic knee replacement
The Stone Clinic in San Francisco http://www.stoneclinic.com is at the forefront of orthopedic surgery. We take a biologic approach to treating joint injuries and arthritis, focusing on repairing the knee, shoulder and ankle. Find out how we can help you: +1-415-563-3110
"Bionic" may sound super human but as far as we're concerned, nothing can beat biology. Artificial joint replacements are sometimes necessary but often they are not. They can and should be avoided if possible. Unfortunately, most artificial material will eventually fail and although patients often return to normal activity, there's a tendency to be more protective of bionic joints.
We take a natural, biologic approach to healing joints. Rather than using artificial materials, our goal is to figure our how our body responds to an injury and then stimulate that response, making it faster and more directed. Using the biologic approach, we can put back a new meniscus cartilage, re-grow the articular cartilage or re-build the ligaments of the knee in order to reconstruct that joint. Our patients go confidently back to impact sports and other strenuous activities.
How to rebuild a knee: The treatment story of pro-skier, Jen Hudak
Professional freestyle skier, Jen Hudak needs two hands to count her broken bones and injured joints. It's hardly surprising. Her career involves skiing at top speed into a giant half pipe of snow packed so hard it's almost ice. She flies up and over the edge of the pipe and hovers briefly, twisting and turning in midair before landing back to do it all over again, trick after trick.
In 2009, a serious knee injury threatened to cut short her sporting career. She sought out The Stone Clinic to help repair her joint. As a pioneer in the field of orthopedics, Kevin R Stone MD uses stem cells and growth factors to help rebuild joints naturally rather than with artificial replacements. "The goal isn't just to get someone back on the slopes" insists Dr. Stone "The goal is to have that person heal their mind and their body and come back fitter than they were before they got hurt" Jen underwent a novel cartilage replacement procedure where Dr. Stone used a technique called an articular cartilage stem cell paste graft, grafting a huge lesion on her lateral femoral condyle, part of her knee and then rebuilding the back corner of her knee where she had ruptured the ligament.
From injury to victory
Post surgery, Jen worked hard on her rehabilitation, helped by the team at The Stone Clinic. "There was a lot expected of me and I expected a lot of myself. I wanted to heal ahead of the curve, I wanted to be back on my feet as soon as I could and they were ready to help me do that." Within 6 months she was back on the slopes. That season was her best season to date; she pushed her newly fixed joint to the limits and won every major competition. For Dr. Stone, the success of an athlete like Jen is a vindication of all that he does. It provides the ultimate test. "It challenges the surgical techniques that we have been innovating for so long to regrow durable cartilage," he says. "It challenges the surgical stabilization ligament techniques that all push beyond the limits that other people thought were possible."

Kevin Stone: The bio-future of joint replacement
http://www.ted.com Arthritis and injury grind down millions of joints, but few get the best remedy -- real biological tissue. Kevin Stone shows a treatment that could sidestep the high costs and donor shortfall of human-to-human transplants with a novel use of animal tissue.

How to get the best results from orthopedic surgery
We want our patients to get the best from their surgery. Much of the work happens in rehabilitation. We have world-class physical therapists here at The Stone Clinic. Together we bring the perspective of understanding both the injury that the patient had and all the different ways we can connect with that patient to help them become fitter, faster and stronger than they were before they got hurt. We encourage patients to think of themselves as an “athlete in training” and not a “patient in rehab”. Pro athletes are be in the gym a couple of times a day, they optimize their nutrition, they optimize their range of motion and their soft tissue, they optimize all the parts that go into making them a world class athlete. Patients who adopt that approach are the ones that do the best. It's really a bargain between the surgeon and the patient and the bargain is that the surgeon gives their best effort surgically and all the skills and all the resources and the patient gives their upmost to make all those tools work well and bring their own body and their mind to rehab everyday, training everyday.
